QUILTING

Kate is an enthusiastic quilter, a member of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles. She belongs to a post-City & Guilds Course group, "Pieces of Eight", and is Chairman of North Dorset Quilters.

"I now run small classes from home during the Winter and Spring terms at Box House. I offer a beginners' 8 week course, and one for those who want to 'do their own thing' but with help. I also have a short list of workshops and talks available on request.

My quilts vary in size, shape and purpose. Having come from a domestic rather than art background to quilting, I feel the need to produce 'useful' items. My largest project to date is a 14 foot high tent. This was definitely one of those 'good idea at the time' projects, though I often wished I hadn't started it. However, twelve months later it was put up in the garden and has regular successful outings for family parties in the summer.

I make bed quilts, lap and cot quilts, and have started making bags of various shapes, sizes and materials. [Again the "useful" element!] Though having a new house with lots of blank white walls has triggered production of some larger pieces to hang in Box House."
